This analytical graduate/early-career role focuses on using AnyLogic software and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) to build, test, and visualize rail simulation models that help clients evaluate complex network operations and performance outcomes.
What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?
At WSP, you can access our global scale, contribute to landmark projects and connect with the brightest minds in your field to do the best work of your life. You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
A little more about your role…
Our Rail Operations Performance and Modelling team continues to grow, and we are looking for a Rail Modelling and Simulation Analyst with experience in Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and a strong interest in developing capability using AnyLogic within the rail sector.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your technical modelling skills while working on a broad range of rail operational and performance projects. You will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality simulation and visualisation outputs, supporting clients to better understand complex operational behaviour and performance outcomes through clear, evidence‑based analysis.
Working as part of our established modelling team, you will support senior modellers and technical leads in the development and application of AnyLogic models, gaining exposure to best practice rail simulation approaches. You will progressively build confidence in applying simulation methods, developing visual outputs, and communicating analysis to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
You will work closely with colleagues across the Rail Operational Planning team and alongside our UK and India‑based modelling teams, contributing to collaborative delivery and benefiting from structured mentoring and technical development. As your experience grows, you will increasingly support client engagement and take on greater responsibility for defined elements of model development and analysis.
Beyond project delivery, you will be encouraged to engage with WSP’s digital and modelling communities of practice, supporting knowledge sharing, personal development, and the continuous improvement of our modelling approaches.
In this role your responsibilities will include:
Supporting the development and application of AnyLogic rail simulation models, contributing to discrete event simulation, visualisation and analytical outputs under the guidance of senior team members.
Contributing to the development of clear, engaging visual outputs that help communicate complex rail operational scenarios and performance outcomes.
Assisting in the preparation of model inputs through data analysis, cleansing and validation, working closely with project teams and clients to understand assumptions and requirements.
Supporting project delivery activities, including defined elements of technical delivery, documentation and quality assurance in line with WSP processes.
Assisting with the production of professional‑quality reports, presentations and proposals, ensuring outputs are accurate, well‑structured and clearly communicated.
Working collaboratively with UK and India‑based team members, contributing to a positive team culture and effective knowledge sharing.
Actively engaging in learning and development opportunities, including training, mentoring and on‑the‑job experience, to build capability in AnyLogic and rail‑specific simulation approaches.
Supporting lessons‑learned activities and knowledge sharing within the team, adopting and applying established good practice in modelling and analysis.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
You will have a degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science or a related discipline, with early‑career or developing experience in simulation, modelling or analytical roles. Experience of rail operations or performance analysis is advantageous but not essential.
We expect you to demonstrate:
Familiarity with simulation, analytical or data analysis tools, with experience or exposure to AnyLogic essential.
A logical, structured approach to problem‑solving, with the ability to analyse information and apply sound reasoning to technical challenges.
Curiosity and enthusiasm for developing technical skills, with a proactive approach to learning and continuous improvement.
The ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, adapting your style to suit different audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
An organised and detail‑oriented approach, with an appreciation of quality, safety, programme and delivery requirements.
A positive and professional attitude, with openness to feedback and a willingness to take responsibility for your own development.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial / Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline.
