Energy Trading role focused on making real-time trading decisions, analysing market data, and managing risk in electricity markets

At Volcore, our team of electricity traders and technical experts work together to make real-time decisions that support increasing renewable generation and keep the electricity system stable. We are a profitable and ambitious scale-up, with several full-time, on-site openings in our trading team to drive our rapid growth.

What You’ll Do

  • Make quick, accurate, profitable trades in response to large amounts of real-time information.

  • Continuously monitor and adapt trade positions to changing market conditions to mitigate risks.

  • Propose new trading ideas and tools and work with the wider team to capitalise on new opportunities.

  • Analyse market dynamics and system fundamentals, collaborating with the tech team to refine models and translate insights into actionable trading strategies.

  • Uphold the integrity of the markets, complying with all internal and external policies and regulations.

This role involves making trades rather than directly coding up the models and tools we use. If the latter is something you have aptitude and passion for, keep an eye out for openings within our tech team.

Power markets trade 7 days a week, so our team work a rotating shift pattern from our Manchester office. Each trader will typically work 5 days a week, of which one day will be a weekend day (on average). Currently our trading roster covers 6am-11pm, although individual shifts are typically only 8-10 hours and we aim to avoid back-to-back evenings and mornings.

Why Volcore?

  • Uncapped career growth: Capital and risk are allocated quickly based on merit, not tenure. New hires make meaningful contributions from day one, bypassing the red tape of large organisational structures.

  • Fast-growing scale-up: We’re a profitable, ambitious company on a rapid growth trajectory, giving you the opportunity to play a key role in shaping our future.

  • Learn from the best: Graduates receive formal and informal training to become a highly skilled energy trader. You'll learn the strategies, tools, and market dynamics that shape the industry.

  • Workspace that works for you: Our office features spacious 4-metre ceilings, a dozen screens per trader for complete market visibility, and end-of-trip facilities with an on-site gym.

  • High-performing, friendly team: Work alongside bright, driven people who are trusted to deliver and enjoy socialising after a successful day.

About You

  • No energy or finance expertise required, but you must quickly learn new concepts and think independently. Your application will greatly benefit from highlighting any experience in advantage betting, poker, real-time trading in stock, FX or other markets, including in a personal capacity.

  • Have a passion for trading, driven by a constructive, competitive spirit and relentless pursuit of excellence. You thrive on the challenge of the markets and find them deeply fascinating. You never give up in the face of obstacles, while also being a collaborative team player.

  • Motivated by tangible outcomes and quick feedback, both from colleagues and the market, to continuously improve and adapt.

  • STEM background with excellent chart reading and proven ability to go beyond theory and apply maths, probability, logical reasoning and problem solving in real-world contexts.

  • Quick, clear decision-making in practical, high-stakes situations. You should be comfortable taking calculated risks and balancing intuition with a methodical approach to manage uncertainty.

  • By the time this role commences, be eligible to live and work full-time in the UK. For the right candidates, we can consider visa sponsorship after at least 13 months of employment, as long as this is made transparent at the time of application.

Starting salary: £34,000 + participation in our bonus scheme for high-performers.
