This graduate maritime structural engineering role within QinetiQ focuses on the structural design and analysis of submarine propulsors, utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and coding tools to assess the structural behavior of composite materials in high-stress environments.
As a Graduate Maritime Structural Engineer, the primary focus of your role will be the delivery of technical projects relating to the structural design of submarine propulsors.
Whilst the role has a specific focus, there will be opportunities to be involved in the group’s wider work streams, which include propulsor and propeller design, dynamic stability, quasi-static stability, seakeeping, resistance and propulsion of surface ships and submarines.
Your responsibilities will include:
Using numerical tools (FEA, Matlab, Python) to look into aspects of the structural design of submarine propulsors to enable the current UK fleet to operate and improve the tools and design for future platforms
Deliver technical projects relating to the structural design of submarine propulsors
Demonstrate the expected QinetiQ values of Integrity, Collaboration and Performance together with behaviours that of Listening, Focus and Keeping our Promises
Work with the wider technical teams to improve your understanding of the work that is being undertaken within the group and share the details of your own work
Combining subject matter expertise and sound engineering judgement to solve problems and breaking down complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work
Managing the project/programme to undertake the work within the agreed quality, timescale and budget
Essential experience of the Graduate Maritime Structural Engineer:
Demonstrable experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Use of FEA tools such as ANSYS or ABAQUS (or others)
Understanding of structural assessment, preferably maritime structures
Experience in working with and testing composite materials and their structural behaviour in high stress environments
Willingness to listen and learn from senior team members and follow instructions closely
Essential qualifications for the Mechanical Engineer:
BEng / MEng in Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Structural Engineering, or equivalent knowledge from previous experience
