A 1-year physics-based R&D internship focused on laboratory testing and development of advanced sensor technologies for power systems.
This 1-year internship will be based at the GE Vernova Grid Solutions Monitoring & Diagnostics site in Lisburn, Northern Ireland and is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic university student or recent graduate who is interested in the application of physics/fundamental science in industry.
The successful applicant will work within the core technology and wider engineering teams, working in transformer sensor technology including the use of photo acoustic spectroscopy and optical techniques for dissolved gas analysis (DGA).
The Monitoring & Diagnostics product line is a class leading vendor of sensing devices and systems to electrical utilities and industrial customers. The product line spans sensing of multiple asset types and has a broad portfolio of advanced technology, which aid customers to understand and optimize the operating condition of key assets such as HV/MV power transformers and circuit breakers. Our products include the Kelman DGA900, Hydran M2-X and BMT-330.
Role responsibilities
Learn & understand the scientific principles and operation of core sensor technology in GE Transformer monitoring equipment.
Work as part of the core technology team on science-based R&D projects and equipment testing, in current products and/or in new technology developments.
Conduct product and experimental testing to agreed plans.
Document and present results to management and the wider engineering team
Essential criteria:
Completed at least 2 years in Physics or relevant related degree.
A strong scientific background & interest/experience in hands-on experimental work.
The ability to work within a team, or under own initiative.
The ability to understand and present new concepts clearly/effectively (including use of appropriate computer programs)
Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
Desirable Criteria
Demonstrated experience in hands-on lab-based research work.
Demonstrated experience with spectroscopy and/or optical techniques.
Experience in software programming languages and/or analytical software packages (e.g., Python, C, Matlab) and automation tools (e.g., Labview, Simulink)
Experience in development and use of scientific/engineering test plans, test equipment
