Graduate Planning Engineer role supporting project scheduling, resource planning, and progress tracking on infrastructure projects, with a 2-year development programme and career progression.

Job Description

Planning plays a key role in delivering any type of project, as it supports the team in identifying the activities needed to deliver and manage the scope, estimate the activities duration and effort, identify who is best to deliver each activity, assess progress, and identify possible risks and issues.

As a Graduate Planning Engineer, you will be responsible for providing planning support, working with the project team to develop and manage programmes of work.

About the project

Costain have won extensive work across the water sector this year to support the AMP 8 investment cycle. We have been appointed by Northumbrian Water to the Living Water Enterprise to help shape and deliver its strategic infrastructure upgrade programme with contracts valued up to c.£670m to Costain over 15 years.

Graduate Development Programme

The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job. The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond.

We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way. In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.

Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.
 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the project plan, capture assumptions and identify dependencies.  

  • Contribute towards the development of work breakdown and monitoring strategy.

  • Identify project resource requirements through the application of project planning techniques.

  • Work with stakeholders to ensure plans are comprehensive.

  • Gathers information from project teams and stakeholders and produces basic project performance reports.

  • Integrate 3rd party schedules and data into the overall project plan

  • Regular interfacing and integration with the project controls team to maintain an aligned financial position with the Project Plan.

  • Developing skills in new software including, Primavera (P6).

     

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • An organised individual that can work well to deadline. 

     

Desirable

  • Previous knowledge of planning activities.

  • Excellent MS Office skills

Qualifications 

  • You will have or expected to achieve a good result in a relevant Project Management/ Project Controls/ Engineering Field (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical) 

  • IT proficient including MS Word and Excel

  • Good verbal and written communications skills

  • Analytical and problem-solving skill

  • Excellence at building and maintaining positive relationships with all people, regardless of their background

  • A willingness to learn

  • Excellent organisation and time management skills

  • The ability to thrive under pressure

  • The ability to empathise and communicate
     

Desirable 

  • Minimum of HNC/HND ideally in a planning discipline or relevant experience

  • APM Project Fundamentals
