Graduate Civil Engineer role offering pathways in Property & Structural Engineering, Infrastructure & Roads, or Water, with hands-on experience in design, calculations, drawings, drainage, highways, flood risk and sustainable infrastructure, supported by experienced engineers and Chartership development.

Choose your route. Build your skills. Shape your career.

At BWB, our Graduate Civil Engineer opportunity gives you the choice to explore the area of engineering that interests you most. Whether you’re drawn to Property & Structural Engineering, Infrastructure & Roads, or Water, you’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technicians who will support you in developing your technical skills, gaining practical experience and building a career you’re proud of.

You’ll start by getting involved in real projects and developing your skills through hands-on experience. As your confidence grows, so will your responsibility, giving you the opportunity to progress onto larger and more challenging projects.

What you’ll be doing

As a Graduate Civil Engineer, you’ll be involved in the design and delivery of a wide variety of projects, working as part of a supportive and collaborative team.

You’ll:

  • Produce design solutions, drawings, calculations and technical information, supported by experienced engineers and technicians.

  • Gain practical experience on smaller projects before progressing to larger and more complex schemes.

  • Work across a wide variety of projects and sectors, each with its own challenges, constraints and opportunities to develop your skills.

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, technicians, clients and other disciplines to develop effective and sustainable solutions.

  • Apply engineering principles, industry standards and design guidance to real-world projects.

  • Develop your understanding of how different engineering disciplines come together to deliver successful projects.

  • Take increasing responsibility for your work as your technical knowledge, confidence and experience develop.

  • Contribute to projects that help shape the places where people live, work and travel, supporting sustainable growth and improving communities.

Choose the route that’s right for you

One of the great things about starting your career at BWB is that you can choose the area of civil engineering that best matches your interests and ambitions.

🏢 Property & Structural Engineering

If you’re interested in buildings, structures and the way they are designed and constructed, our Property Team will give you the opportunity to work across a variety of sectors and project types.

You’ll support the delivery of Civil and Structural Engineering projects by assisting with:

  • Structural analysis and design calculations

  • Production and checking of technical drawings

  • Technical reports and design information

  • Applying Eurocodes and British Standards

  • Using industry-standard engineering software

  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams

You’ll be supported by experienced engineers while developing the technical knowledge and practical understanding needed to progress your career.

🛣️ Infrastructure & Roads

If you’re passionate about how people and places connect, our Infrastructure Roads Team will give you the opportunity to work on highway and infrastructure projects from concept through to delivery.

You’ll develop skills in:

  • Producing 2D highway layouts and 3D models using AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Highway design and calculations

  • Drainage, signage, pavements and street lighting

  • Applying the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and local design standards

  • Understanding how the different elements of a highway work together

  • Working alongside Geotechnics, Bridge & Civil Structures, Water and Project Management teams

You’ll gain an understanding of how infrastructure is designed to meet the needs of communities, while delivering safe, efficient and sustainable solutions.

💧 Water

If you’re interested in the relationship between engineering, water and the environment, our Water Team offers the opportunity to work on projects that help manage flood risk and create more sustainable places.

You’ll gain experience in areas including:
