A Graduate Civil Engineer role supporting feasibility studies and engineering design for flood protection, coastal and water infrastructure projects while working towards professional qualification.

About Binnies

Binnies, an RSK Group company, is seeking enthusiastic and motivated Graduate Flood and Coastal Consultants to join our respected Flood, Coast & Environment (FCE) team in Bradford on Avon.

We work extensively with the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, water companies, and local authorities to develop practical, sustainable solutions to flood and coastal risk challenges.

Our projects span the full project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and business case development to detailed design, implementation, and monitoring. We help identify and develop cost-effective flood risk management solutions, prepare business cases to secure funding, and use the latest digital technologies to design effective schemes. We also support local authorities in fulfilling their flood risk management responsibilities and developing flood risk, drainage, and coastal management policies and strategies.

Joining our team will give you the opportunity to contribute to projects that protect communities, strengthen resilience to climate change, and deliver lasting benefits for the natural and built environment.

The Opportunity

Are you looking to build a career in flood and coastal risk management while contributing to projects that make a real difference to people and the environment?

As a Graduate Flood and Coastal Consultant, you will work on surface water, fluvial, and coastal risk management projects, gaining experience across the project lifecycle, from initial assessment and option development through to implementation and monitoring.

Working under the guidance of experienced colleagues, you will help develop and assess a range of flood risk management solutions, combining traditional engineering infrastructure with nature-based approaches where appropriate.

You will develop your technical, analytical, and project delivery skills while gaining exposure to the commercial and client-facing aspects of consultancy.

We are committed to supporting your professional development through our Graduate Training Scheme, access to experienced mentors and technical specialists, and tailored support towards professional accreditation with a recognised institution, such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

You will join a collaborative and supportive team that encourages continuous learning, professional growth, and the development of technical expertise, underpinned by our ENGAGED cultural values.

Key Responsibilities

As a Graduate Flood and Coastal Consultant, you will support the delivery of a diverse range of flood and coastal risk management projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Data analysis and interpretation: Analyse flood and coastal datasets, undertake research, and use geographical information systems (GIS) to identify risks, trends, and potential solutions.

  • Flood risk modelling: Support the development and application of computer models to assess flood risk, including hydrological analysis and the interpretation and presentation of results.

  • Risk assessment: Identify key challenges facing clients, considering the effects of climate change and societal change on flood and coastal risk.

  • Technical reporting: Contribute to the preparation of flood risk assessments, surface water management plans, business cases, local flood risk management strategies, and other technical documents.

  • Solution development: Assist in identifying, appraising, and developing effective flood and coastal risk management solutions, including engineering and nature-based approaches.

  • Project delivery: Support the delivery of defined work packages within agreed budgets and programmes, ensuring client requirements are met.

  • Scope and change management: Develop an understanding of project scope, contractual obligations, and the identification of potential changes.

  • Client requirements: Understand clients’ needs, objectives, and technical and performance requirements to help deliver appropriate solutions.

  • Quality and communication: Produce clear, concise, accurate, and well-presented deliverables tailored to their intended audience.

  • Team collaboration: Work closely with Project Technical Leads, Project Managers, Project Directors, and multidisciplinary colleagues.

  • Workload management: Organise and prioritise tasks effectively while contributing to multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

  • Professional development: Take an active role in developing your technical capabilities and progressing towards a relevant professional qualification.

About You

We are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic graduate with a genuine interest in flood and coastal risk management, water, and the wider environmental sector.

You will ideally have:

  • Academic qualifications: A degree in a relevant discipline, such as Science, Geography, or Environmental Science. A relevant MSc in flood risk, water, or environmental management would be advantageous.

  • Relevant academic background: Strong academic foundations in relevant STEM subjects and/or Geography.

  • Technical interest: A motivation to work on flood and coastal risk management, water, and maritime projects.

  • Digital skills: Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications and GIS software.

  • Communication skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and effectively.

  • Analytical thinking: A methodical and proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to interpret information, evaluate options, and develop practical solutions.

  • Organisation and prioritisation: The ability to plan and organise tasks, manage competing priorities, and work effectively under time pressure.

  • Attention to detail: A commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.

  • Teamwork: The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and contribute positively to shared objectives.

  • Professional integrity: A commitment to working honestly and openly, taking responsibility, and embracing Binnies’ ENGAGEDA cultural values.

  • Flexibility: A willingness to travel to client offices and project sites as required.

  • Industry awareness: An awareness of relevant legislation, policies, and working practices within the flood, coastal, and maritime sectors would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Above all, we value curiosity, initiative, creative and practical thinking, and a willingness to learn. You should be motivated to develop your technical expertise, contribute to meaningful projects, and build a long-term career in flood and coastal risk management.
