Graduate Consultant - Accessible & Inclusive Environments

Arup Graduate Accessible & Inclusive Environments Consultant role supporting inclusive design, accessibility assessments, drawing reviews, site audits, research and stakeholder engagement to improve accessibility across buildings, transport and public spaces.

The Opportunity

Our Accessible and Inclusive Environments team works with clients to create places that are accessible, welcoming and usable by as many people as possible. We call this inclusive design: understanding the needs and experiences of diverse users and using those insights to inform better design decisions. No two projects are the same and our work ranges from workplaces and transport systems to retail, education and public realm projects.

We are driven by curiosity, constantly asking how different people experience the built environment and what could be improved. Graduates play an active role in the team, supporting drawing reviews, research, site visits and report writing, while developing the skills needed to influence the design of more inclusive environments.

• Review architectural drawings, specifications and design proposals against access and inclusive design principles and standards.

• Undertake research into user needs, inclusive design guidance and emerging best practice.

• Support site surveys, accessibility audits and stakeholder engagement activities, recording observations and helping to identify opportunities for improvement.

• Assist with the preparation of technical reports, presentations and client deliverables.

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop practical, evidence-based recommendations that improve the experience of diverse users.

Is this role right for you?  

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

• A bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline such as Architecture, Urban Planning; Geography & Geospatial Science; Human Factors / Ergonomics

• Demonstrable commitment to / interest in access and inclusive design or equality, diversity and inclusion; Strong written and visual communication skills

• Reading drawings; working understanding of equalities legislation; working understanding of building regulations & statutory approvals processes; working understanding of planning processes; CAD; Stakeholder engagement; demonstrable knowledge of common accessibility issues and the social model of disability; experience of applying technical design standards
