A traffic & highway engineering apprenticeship focused on designing safer and more efficient transport systems, combining engineering, infrastructure, and sustainability, with hands-on experience in both office and site environments.

Job Description

At AECOM, we’re building a better world — delivering sustainable, efficient, and inclusive infrastructure that connects people and communities. As one of the largest and most respected Traffic & Highway Engineering teams in the UK and Ireland, we design and deliver solutions that make streets safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable to use.

Our projects range from improving active travel routes and public transport corridors to creating award-winning urban streetscapes and complex new road projects. We work with Local Authority and National Highways Clients across the country.

Joining us as a Traffic & Highway Engineering Apprentice means being part of a collaborative team that shapes the way people move. You’ll combine on-the-job experience with structured study — developing practical skills while working toward professional qualifications and a rewarding career in transport and civil engineering.

Role Overview

As a Traffic & Highway Engineering Apprentice, you’ll assist our engineers and designers on a wide range of traffic and transport projects. You’ll learn how to develop, design, and deliver engineering solutions that support active travel, public transport, and safer road networks.

You’ll work as part of multidisciplinary teams and gain hands-on experience using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Building Information Modelling (BIM) software. Over time, you’ll take on more responsibility as your skills and knowledge develop.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of design drawings, plans, and supporting documents using CAD and design software.

  • Support the delivery of highways, traffic engineering and active travel schemes, from concept through to detailed design.

  • Help collect, analyse, and interpret traffic and transport data.

  • Contribute to highways design, signage layouts, and streets design

  • Participate in site visits to gather information and observe existing conditions.

  • Assist in preparing technical reports and presentation materials.

  • Maintain project records and support general project administration.

Qualifications

This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English

  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above – required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship

  • An interest in civil, transport, or traffic engineering and a desire to build a career in the field.

  • Aptitude for software-based engineering and drawing, e.g., AutoCAD or 3D modelling tools.

  • Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Awareness of transport, sustainability, or urban design issues.

  • Enthusiasm for creating safer, more sustainable, and more accessible streets.

  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development

  • A creative, practical, and adaptable mindset with a passion for problem-solving

  • Strong attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively in a team and show initiative when working independently
