About the Team
AECOM’s Sustainability team, part of our Building Engineering Business Line, is recognised as a leader in sustainable development. Our specialists help clients design and deliver low-carbon, resilient, and sustainable buildings and communities.
We support projects across the entire building lifecycle—from early feasibility and planning through design, construction, and operation. Our work spans a wide range of sectors including housing, healthcare, education, commercial offices, retail, and hospitality, as well as advisory work for existing building portfolios.
Our projects range from supporting government policy on climate change and sustainability to developing energy and sustainability strategies for major developments and regeneration projects.

Net zero and low-carbon strategies for cities, masterplans, and developments
Energy strategies and energy statements to support planning applications
Circular economy and sustainability advisory services
Life cycle and embodied carbon assessments
Environmental certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, Home Quality Mark, and RICS Ska Rating
Health and wellbeing consultancy, including WELL Building Standard
Energy auditing and carbon management for existing buildings
Heat network and decentralised energy feasibility studies
Research and policy development relating to climate resilience and sustainable buildings
Example Projects
Our team works on a diverse range of high-profile developments and public sector projects. These include major regeneration schemes such as Wood Wharf, Silvertown Quays, and UCL East Campus.
We also support government organisations including the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and the Climate Change Committee.
Our work includes sustainability advice for major developments such as the North West Cambridge Development and long-term infrastructure strategies for the Houses of Parliament.
Key Responsibilities
With support from the wider team, you may be involved in:
Assisting with environmental certifications such as BREEAM, DREAM, LEED, and Home Quality Mark (training provided)
Preparing circular economy and sustainability statements for development projects
Supporting life cycle and embodied carbon assessments
Developing energy and sustainability strategies to support design teams and planning applications
Contributing to research and policy work relating to sustainable buildings and climate resilience
Conducting energy audits and identifying efficiency improvements for existing buildings
Supporting heat network feasibility studies and concept designs
The successful candidate will be expected to work on defence and security-built environment projects.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (BEng or MEng) in a relevant discipline such as engineering, environmental science, sustainability, or building services.
A Master’s degree in building sustainability, energy, environmental design, or a related field is desirable.
Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and apply it to practical sustainability solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information.
High attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving.
Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage a varied workload across multiple projects.
A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in sustainable buildings, low-carbon design, and environmental performance.
Eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance is required. This means applicants must be a UK sole national.
The successful candidate will be expected to work on defence and security-built environment projects
