Support the workshop team in servicing, inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy vehicles while completing a structured apprenticeship and developing mechanical engineering skills.Purpose of the role: As an Apprentice Workshop Engineer, you will support the Workshop team in carrying out servicing, inspections (in line with VOSA standards), and repairs on a range of Distribution Tractors, heavy vehicles, and associated equipment. You will learn how to complete visual and operational checks, assist with fault finding, and carry out repairs under supervision using diagnostic tools, technical manuals, and guidance from experienced engineers. This role offers hands-on experience and structured development to build your technical skills and knowledge within a professional workshop environment.During your apprenticeship, you will develop skills in:Supporting mechanical repairs and vehicle maintenanceAssisting with basic electrical diagnostics and repairsUnderstanding technical manuals, diagrams, and service instructionsUsing workshop tools and diagnostic equipment safely and effectivelyCarrying out vehicle inspections in line with industry standardsLearning how to produce clear and accurate job reportsResponsibilities Assist with vehicle servicing, inspections, and repairs under supervisionLearn how to diagnose faults and support repair work across a range of vehicle makes and modelsMaintain a high standard of cleanliness, safety, and organisation within the workshopAccurately complete documentation with guidance from senior engineersCommunicate effectively with colleagues and supervisorsFollow instructions to interpret and resolve basic vehicle defect reportsWork collaboratively as part of the workshop teamSupport colleagues in daily workshop tasks as requiredParticipate in any training and development activities providedComply with all Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures, including PPE useAssist with mobile repair work when required, under supervisionSkills and Attributes Required: Willingness to learn and develop new technical skillsStrong attention to detailPositive attitude and good work ethicAbility to follow instructions and work as part of a teamGood communication skillsBasic problem-solving abilityFlexible approach to work and learningStandards of Performance: Demonstrate a commitment to learning and developmentWork safely and follow workshop procedures at all timesDeliver tasks to a good standard with supervisionBuild knowledge and competence over timeMaintain a professional and positive attitudeQualifications and Experience required: Interest in mechanical engineering, automotive, or heavy vehiclesGCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English preferredEnrolled in or willing to undertake an appropriate apprenticeship (e.g. Heavy Vehicle Service & Maintenance)No prior experience required, but any hands-on or mechanical exposure is beneficialSkills and Competencies Required:Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.Strong communication skills.Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.Attention to detail and quality focus.Familiarity with health and safety standards.To be able and willing to communicate effectively within Workshop Management and Supervision, work colleagues and customers.To be able to interpret and remedy vehicle defect descriptions communicated by vehicle users.To be willing to assist colleagues in the execution of their jobs as required.A flexible approach to working in a workshop team environment.A flexible approach to working hours is required along with the ability to travel extensively both in the UK and overseas as required.The factory unit is based in Elland however the applicant must be flexible in terms of working location and be prepared to work as required sometimes away at our customer’s premises.To be able to work temporarily at other locations within the group undertaking a similar role.Undertake such other duties commensurate with the post as may be required for the safe and effective performance of the company.Good knowledge of Health & Safety requirements within a workshop environment.To liaise with the Workshop senior engineer and Workshop Co-ordinator at the Commencement of duty each morning to receive guidance/instructions on Vehicle defects and related repair priorities.
